People ask the question as though it's breaking news that they're bringing to your attention. They have a habit of asking as though you're oblivious; it sometimes seems that they may have considered asking you to first ensure that you were sitting. Sometime's it's asked as though braced for an answer that is shocking or somehow surprising. Sometimes with a tone that suggests the question is rhetorical; simply a politeness to draw your attention to something that needs correcting. As if you simply hadn't noticed.
